The city of Alicante experienced an historic rain on the night of 13 to 14 March 2017 !

137 liters of water per square meter at night with even a peak during the night of 70 liters in less than 2 hours !

First of all, there is no human damage and only minor damage is reported (flooded garages). Five schools in the city will even be closed on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

The beaches given the configuration of the city of Alicante were submerged (cf image of the beach of Albuferata).

Roads cut due to rain in Alicante

Note in Alicante on the well known Avenida de Denia which allows to leave the city by the North, the road has to be cut because of flood.

The bypass to Elche was also disrupted.

Why are these precipitations in Alicante at this period

Generally rainfall records are in this part of Spain (from Valencia to Almeria) after the summer and also between April and May, when the changes in weather and temperatures are very strong.

But it is without counting this year 2017 where the hot weather periods have succeeded to the very cold periods (as in January 2017). Recall that only a few days ago a huge heat wave sprayed the temperature records in the region of Alicante with a peak at 34 degrees Celsius (Urbanova / Grand Alicante) !

History of rainfall records in Alicante

The highest rain record in Alicante was 30 September 1997, still well above 270 L of water per m2 with human and material dramas ...

The second one goes back in 1982, on 20 October with precipitation reaching 233 l / m2.

This night from March 13 to March 14 is so since the measures exist on the podium of the worst rains in the south of the community of Valencia.
